Question: hi again, ist not an hdi model alan its the older type turbo diesel, its also just developed a problem, its running rough and throwing quite alot of white smoke out. if i remove the water cap the engine runs perfect with no smoke at all, any ideas? thank you
Answer: Sounds like a head gasket problem....

Question: Cosworth- no didnt have guides done the bottom end was put in by paul hills at engine advantages the head had to be sent of to be skimmed and i wasnt told they needed to be done so i hope its not them how much would you charge to do valve stem seals and guides if it is them,i will take turbo of in mean time and get it checked thanks
Answer: Head overhaul is around 200 for a Cosworth, assuming you bring the head in under your arm! You'd get the head back cleaned and overhauled, ready to fit.

Question: Like to fit a nice loud dump valve to my evo 8..is that possible ? If it is ok, then followed by a rolling session ,.....Approx cost pse Thxs
Answer: Hi. The loudest ones tend to be Turbosmart or Blitz. Between 185 and 250 plus vat. We charge 60 plus vat for a full session on our dyno for turbo 4x4.

Question: hi alan, i have a 1997 xantia td and was just wondering how i would go about upping the power levels. ive been told turning up the boost and fuelling, how true is this? also alan would a piper cross, a dump valve and sports exhaust make a difference? would any of this be an easy diy job aswell or would i need an expert? thank you
Answer: If it uses electronic control like the HDi, you can chip them. If not, you need to find someone who can modify it, such as maybe Van Aaken Developments? Air filters and exhaust achieve very little on low revving diesels, and can sound awful. A dump valve is a waste of space on any diesel, as they don't use throttle valves, and don't suffer from compressor problems like petrol engines.

Question: i have a 1990 2wd cossie that has just had a fully rebuilt 200 block just put in and now if i leave it running for five mins then give it a rev it will smoke oily smelling smoke and sometimes while driving on boost it will smoke
Answer: Possible turbo issue. I would remove it, and get it checked out by someone like Turbo Technics or Turbo Dynamics. If it's duff, they'll tell you and if it isn't at least you'll know what the score is with that one. I have to assume you've had the guides done already?
