Question: Some days my 220 idles at 1500rpm other days round 900rpm albeit a bit rough and other days it wont idle at all. Even when idling high it seems a bit erratic, can you please help
Answer: Typical Rover idle fault! They suffer with a number of problems, with ECU faults common. Try calling Mike on 01752 894842. He repairs them!

Question: Hi alan I\'m wondering if you can help.I\'m having problems with the idle on my car if I press the breaks it struggles to tick over if I pump the peddel it almost cuts out!I\'ve done the all the commonsence things plugs leads dizzycap and arm. But it still there I\'ve even fitted a new set of samco boost hoses and the two inlet manifold gaskets and a baileys breather kit incase of an airleak I planned to do these mods anyway so it was\'nt a problem along with a piper cam and ajustable pulley which I did but it still strugged to tick over mostly when it was up to running temp when breaking or using the cars electrical stuff i.e.heater,rad fan etc.the car was running a bit lumpy after the cam so I dicided to have it tuned up at hi-tec motorsport on the rollers. After a bit of messing around he told me the diapram in the brain was worn causing it to shut down.He advised me to have a chip at a later date but he would get it running half right for now.He ajusted the actuator and fitted a bleed valve to fine tune the boost best he could it ran 156bhp(1.2bar).It drove like a different car after that pulls well through the gears except up steep hills where it sometimes holds back and backfires but I can live with that for now as money is a bit short!the tickover problem is still there so I\'ve turned the idle up for now someone said it might be something to do with the dump valve? If you could shed any light on this I would be very thankfull cheers!scott.
Answer: Hi Scott. These cars always demand careful attention, and are subject to a great many local difficulties! You can't beat taking to someone who knows something about them. Hard to find as they are now getting on a bit! You just might have a brake servo air leak from what you're saying. Have a close listen through a tube around the base of the master cylinder.

Question: alan, ive recently put my high torque cams into my corsa [x16xe - running map sensor] on the correct timing marks im getting too many pulses to my map sensor.... if i disconnect the sensor they run fine.....but i lose all throttle response. so alternatively i advanced the exhaust cam 22 degrees, which removed the split overlap (in effect).... although i now have a lot more top end, ive lost all bottom end power with a huge flatspot (all the way to 2k rpm):( any ideas?
Answer: The cam timing shouldn't deviate very far from the designers specifications. 22 degrees is a huge deviation! I'm wondering if there is an error somewhere, or maybe if you could consider re-siting the map sensor feed? Are you using vernier pulleys with a protractor?

Question: Hi Alan i am thinking of buying a WRX on a m plate 60000k this would be my first scoobie and my and my daughters dream car please could you give me an idea of the cost of running one of these cars and how reliable they are because when i tell people i am thinking of buying one i get alot of negative feed back.thanks Scott
Answer: Hi Scott- Imprezas are much abused by their owners, which tends to cause problems with any car! If you buy one in good condition, then immediately get it checked out by a specialist to ensure it's all ok, you shouldn't have too many issues. Unwise modifications are the root of many problems, and as long as it isn't overboosting, running lean, or inadequately serviced, these cars can be very reliable. Fuel consumption isn't a good feature! 25 mpg is about it. You just have to accept that, in return for the fantastic performance and handling you get in return.
