Question: Alan, I've been looking around for a way to effectively 're-map' my existing EEC-IV ECU (System from the '85-87 2.8 Granada - fitted to my normally aspirated MK1 XR4x4). Engine is 10.4:1, high-lift rockers, flowed heads, custom cam, rebuilt bottom-end etc etc.... Obviously I would also need to be able to change the map as other modifications are made, ie via laptop/software. What are your recommendations? Appreciate your help.
Answer: Hi.. You can't do it! I don't know of any method of getting at the EEC4 system directly. A Flash module may be possible, plugged into the serial port. I doubt you would need much added to the standard file, apart from maybe a touch more advance. Of course, you can adjust the base ignition, and maybe add an extra injector for more fuelling if you find it needs it. We supply the MF2 system, and it's simple and quick to adjust. I would have a rolling road session first, to see what's required.

Question: Hi Alan, I have a Seat Ibiza 1.4 (1999) and I am wondering how much a port and polish and superchip would cost and benefit (bhp) me. Also could my car be turbo'ed (or supercharged)? If so what price am I looking at for one. Thanks
Answer: Hi.. A Superchip is ?270 inc vat and fitting. A decent flowed head and mild cam would be around ?700 all in, for around 15 bhp increase. Personally, I wouldn't consider forced induction, as you could just buy an Ibixa turbo and save all the bother!

Question: please can you help me i have a 94 1800 td escort and i am trying to replace sump gasket but to no avail as cannot get the sump off can you tell me if there is any point of fixation in the gearbox or if it is just the bolts round the outside
Answer: Hi.. I haven't heard of that one! Mind you, I've never personally had the sump off one either. I can't think of a reason why it would be designed that way. If it was just located at one end, with all the other bolts off, then you should be able to notice movement at the pulley end. When stripping anything you don't know about, a little tentative tweaking can sometimes be the answer. I don't mean to use a crowbar!

Answer: We charge ?450 inc fitting, rolling road and vat. I'd expect to see another 30 bhp or so from that conversion, with a big increase in torque. Dump valves from ?80 plus vat for double piston type.

Question: Hi Alan Wonder if you could help me I have this 1.6 16v vauxhall engine in my MK Indy kitcar and it is running as it was in the doner car with standard fuel injection I want to run it on bike carbs i have been told yamaha R1 carbs are the ones to go for and i know all the other bits i need on the fuel side,however i need to over come the ignition as it is ecu standard A mappable ecu is a bit expensive for me and i have seen alot of people in motorsport running the 2lt xe engine on carbs with a distributor fitted in place of the electronic ignition Would this work for my engine and if so what dizzy would i need to fit Any ideas wuld be great thanks again Mick
Answer: Hi Mick - The 1.6 16 valve never came with a distributor, so it's hard to see how you could fit one as it doesn't have a drive. You may just have to bite the bullet and go for a mappable system, such as Omex or Emerald. We've set up a couple of cars on bike carbs now, and it's possible to get there, although the jetting is radically different from the bike spec.
