Question: Hi - I asked a question a few days back regarding my carb - and you diagnosed it as a blocked primary jet. This was correct and I cleaned as you do. This appeared to fix the carb, but the problem re-occurs a while after cleaning the jet. I'm guessing that a filter isn't cleaning my fuel properly or something, but how do I stop the problem re-occuring - as I don't want to clean the jets every 5 minutes!!! Cheers
Answer: Hi..Start by cleaning the whole carb, making sure you get into as mamy little places as poss. You can't beat an air line for blowing the passages out. They come apart quite easily if you're careful, and don't force anything. Always hold the carb over a container, in case a bit drops out and you lose it! Make a note of jet numbers so you don't mix them up. Then fit an in-line filter if it doesn't already have one. If you're struggling with this, a garage shouldn't charge much for that little job, but make sure whoever looks at it is old enough to remember carbs!

Question: I have a Escort Mk6/7 1800i 16v, and have added induction, exhaust, and soon hope to add fse boost valve and possibly fast road cam. I wanted to know which would be the best course of action as far as upgrading my ECU would be?
Answer: Not such an easy choice these days, as the Flash Module conversions are no longer made by Superchips. Give me a call on 01752 345880 office hours, and maybe we can discuss an alternative.

Question: I have a Renault Megane 1.6 RXE 1996 and it is intermittently stalling. It's been to the garage 3 times and eventually they diagnosed a failed battery being the problem. But it is still stalling. Any ideas ? What's happening is when I pull up and place my foot on the clutch the revs drop to nearly zero. In about 50% of cases it passes the point of no return and stalls. In the other 50% of cases the revs rise back up to the normal idle speed of around 600-700rpm and is ok. Also when the engine is warming from cold the idle speed hunts around swinging between around 400 and 1500 rpm. Got any thoughts ? What should I tell my garage to look at ?
Answer: These stalling faults are driving us mad. I blame the designers for foisting crap like idle control valves on us! Try cleaning out the throttle body with carb cleaner first, then go for a code read in case there is a management fault. After that, you're on your own!

Question: My Renault 19 is standard and has 80hp. When I look at the specs of the latest Renault cars with 1.4 engine, I see that they now produce 98hp ... What's the difference between my engine and the latest ones ? If it's the same engine with different settings only, what are they ? Or what parts to change to get 98hp from my Renault 19 1.4 ? Cheers
Answer: Hi.. The chances are the engines may look similar, but don't interchange at all. The difficulty comes with the cost and aggravation required to change a surprising amount of parts!
