Question: I have an S Reg Corsa Breeze 1.4i and it's running very badly, especially in the morning. The car takes a couple of attempts to start and once it's going it often stalls at junctions and kangaroos while moving. When driving at higher speed it randomly kangaroos and loses speed, often sticking at say 60mph even with the accelerator fully pressed. It then recovers but randomly occurs at any time during a journey. I've had problems in the past with the crank connector, and have been told it could be the air inlet manifold, but I don't know ?.
Answer: Hi Andrew- you have to start with a fault code read done by a dealer or tuner. This should point out faults with sensors or circuits. You shouldn't have to pay more than ?35 or so for that, and at least it should eliminate the easy stuff.

Question: Escort Gti 16v-I seem to be having an idling problem. Sometimes when I start the car, the car seems not to be able to find an idling speed and the rev counter jumps up and down between 2000 and 700. I also have the problem that when I am driving the car and slow down, when I dip the clutch the revs seem to drop below 400 and the car stalls. (this normally happens when going from 2nd to first). Can you suggest what the potential probs could be as I do not have much dosh and do not want to get ripped off at a garage. Ta
Answer: Hi Lammy- start by cleaning out the throttle body with carb cleaner. Very often breather gases can clog the butterfly area and cause idle faults. There are loads of reasons for failures with these things, and at least starting with that is cheap! The ECU has a "keep alive memory" to control idle values, and it may be an idea to disconnect the ECU from the loom to re-set it. You may find it will take a while for the idle to re-establish itself afterwards. Best of luck!

Question: The heater in my (just bought)Sierra 1.8 does not work at all. I have been told it is probably the matrix. Can it be flushed? (my father has recommended Calgon) or is there a simpler way? The fan works well and heater controls seem fine.
Answer: Your Father watches too much telly! lol.. the trouble with flushing is it tends to pass water through the unblocked bits, and ignore the blocked ones. They tend to clog up with bits of corrosion from the cast engine blocks.Replacing the matrix isn't impossible, but allow plenty of time!

Question: I want to get more power from my gt4 its a 92 jap import I have fitted a full Scorpion exhaust(theres no cat) and HKS induction kit and some decent plugs!could the boost be raised to give it some more go?And how much would I need to spend?Cheers Rob
Answer: Hi Rob - A Superchip ABC board and adjustable bleed valve would add around 30 bhp with the boost set at 14 psi ( 1 bar )Assuming you don't have any faults, it should be safe at that level. Close the plug gaps up to .8mm and only run 97 octane fuel.Call me for prices!

Question: Hi mate, I recently bought an Escort S2 RST. Basically I know nothing about turbos but very good engine knowledge. I bought this and I noticed the amal valve has no tubes attatched, the one to the air box is blocked off at air box end, it also has a bleed valve which is attached to the turbo to the actuator (dash31) i think, is this right as i think it is over boosting, is it just a case of turning the bleed valve in. or should something be connected to the amal valve, cheers, dave
Answer: Hi Dave- We often see these with the amal valves by-passed. It's not significant if you have the boost you require. If you don't have a boost gauge, you'll need one to set the boost up. Start by winding in the valve, then slowly increase a bit at a time until you have the level you want. If it's chipped, you can run up to 14 psi with a standard intercooler, assuming everything else is ok. If it isn't chipped, you'll find it will cut out at anything over 10 psi or so. In which case, just set it at 8 psi and leave it there! You may find the boost will "spike" a little i.e. surge up in the lower revs, then drop back as the revs increase. Personally, I wouldn't worry about this, bear in mind these cars are all getting on a bit now! ANY doubt about doing this yourself, bear in mind it's often better to find someone who knows how to do it without blowing the engine up, and just pay the Man.
