Question: My Escort has just failed its MOT due to the emmisions being very high. Apparently they should be 0. something but they are at over 100. What should I check, is this a common problem. The car is letting off a lot of steam and leaving a trail of water (I think) from the exhaust. I have replaced the oil filter and changed the oil and have also used red x in the fuel. Any ideas?
Answer: Hello Dean- I'm assuming it's the CO that's high, in which case you'll need to check the management system out. It's a job for an expert really.I'd only worry about water out the exhaust if it's actually overheating as well.

Question: Hi , I am looking to replace the head on my pug for a ported one but I am unsure on what size engine is fitted ( it says 1.6 on the log but the bloke I bought it off told me it was a 1.9) is there an easy way of telling the difference between the two or will it need to come apart? also I am looking to fit twin sidedraft Webers on it and was wondering what was involved in this hope you can help cheers Pete
Answer: Hello Pete- The numbers on the block are significant, but I can't remember what they mean. I would ring the local Peugeot dealer, and ask the parts man, they have all the info! Sidedraft carbs are fine, and will pick up around 20 bhp right away. You just need the manifold and linkage to go with them, plus a fuel pressure regulator, so you could carry on using the injection pump. We can supply all of this, if you want it.

Question: Please help me I've spend a fortune on my Carlton basically no 4 cylinder had oil in it the valve guide was replaced as was a bent inlet valve plus head was skimmed after all that it was still misfiring. The cam timing was checked then a faulty injector was diagnosed and replaced - still missing. When MOT'd HC's were was fine, CO gave a reading of 2.47 and (way high) and lambda reading was slightly lower than acceptable range. ECU has been replaced. The engine light is on and diagnostic says the problem is the lambda sensor although I am told this may not mean it's the lambda sensor at fault. I'm at a loss, could replacing the lambda and map sensor do the trick and stop the overfueling, and will the cat now need replacing due to the misfire. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Graham
Answer: If it's still misfiring, it's unlikely to be due to the lambda sensor. The CO is high, but not that high as to cause a running fault.Any misfire is going to be down to something affecting an individual cylinder.I would start with a compression test, then move on to HT electrics, then look for air leaks etc.The lambda should put out a voltage on the signal wire (black) relative to the mixture.I would expect to see a steady voltage of around .4 to .5 if the lambda is duff.If it's showing around .9 of a volt the lambda is fine, and the mixture fault is elsewhere.A mixture test with a four gas analyser will tell you if the cat is faulty. If the figures are correct when you've fixed the misfire and poor mixture control, it will be fine!

Question: Hello my bottom end is on its last legs and would like to replace it with a larger and low mileage bottom end, is it possible to use a saxo vtr or 106 rallye s2 1.6 bottom end on my ax gt and continue to use the 1.4 head and carb cause don't really want injection I love the sound of carbs to much. cheers Tom
Answer: These engines are all from the same family, and I can't think of any reason why not offhand. I'm sure I've had at least one car in for tuning with this done, but to be on the safe side, try Cituning, who do more of these than we do.
