Subject: Delorean BAE-Rayjay Turbo Boost Pressure & Distributor mod.

Question: To Alan, I have just managed to get a BAE systems single turbo for my Delorean. It is a re-badged rayjay with an external wastegate. The car uses the Volvo B28F 2.8litre V6 engine with 8.8:1 compression ratio. I will be running the boost at about 5.5 to 6lbs of boost instead of the 9lbs to preserve engine life and use standard unleaded petrol. The fuel injection is standard KE-Jetronic and all works perfectly.What modifications woulc I have to do with the distributor? Change the bob-weight springs or make up a boost retard system? I have heard that locking the weights and running at 24 degress BTDC is possible? I have heard that you need to set the distributor to 0 BTDC to retard the max advance to 24 degrees is the way to go but I would have thought this would have altered the poer low down the rev range. Is the standard KE-Jetronic up to the job? I would value your advice as info on this conversion is a bit thin on the ground Thanks in advance for your time. Nick.
Answer: Interesting project!- You can't beat controlling the ignition properly whatever the situation really, or run the risk of compromising off boost performance and economy. Turbo Technics used a boost retard capsule, ( Saab?) in place of the standard vac unit, which knocked around 8 degrees off for boost, but allowed a vac advance for low load settings. An alternative is to investigate an electronic method of ignition control. The KE jet system is often used for turbo cars, such as the Escort RS turbo, so is inherently suitable, and can be tweaked for extra fuelling via the hydraulic pressure actuator.

Question: Previously you chipped my bmw 328-i sport with great success! Any thoughts on what performance improvements you can make to an MR2 ?Is it worth it?
Answer: Assuming it's a 2 litre non turbo, not a great deal, apart from air induction kit and exhaust. Together worth about 7 to 10 bhp, depending on which version you have.

Question: Is there any way I can check functioning of amal valve?.
Answer: Simple method of testing the whole amal valve system is to check the boost with and without it. Just run the car full throttle in third, preferably up a gradient. Note the boost maximum, and as much detail about the way it behaves as possible. Then by-pass the valve, connecting the pipes leading from the turbo compressor to the wastegate actuator directly, using the original hoses as much as possible. Then repeat the exercise. You should see a substantial drop in boost!

Question: I have smoke on overrun from boost whilst driving,I suspect turbo needs overhaul,anything I should check first?,cars valve seals/rings appear ok.
Answer: Always hard to be certain about this one, as it's possible to have a bit of a problem with the whole engine. Generally, bad ring seal (oil control) would cause smoking under load all the time. Bad valve guides could cause smoking on start up, as well as a puff on opening the throttle. A turbo will often smoke at idle, as well as on the over run. It's possible for a turbo to leak at either or both ends, causing leakage into the compressor housing or exhaust downpipe. You could check for oil at the compressor outlet, this end should be free of oil at all times, assuming you don't have a breather problem causing contamination at the filter end. If you'd like me to assist, I could have the turbo collected from you, and we'll check it out.
