Subject: Cossie 4 x 4

Question: I've got a very hot running 4X4 cossie. It has minor mods, 355s, 19lb boost. std compression. On relatively short journeys, or even if I switch on and leave the car idling the water will boil over. Another problem is that the fans do not come on either. In the fusebox, the fuse that is labelled for the fans is OK, but the one in the top left corner gets VERY hot -that it has MELTED several times. Why is the water getting so hot? What can I do to lower it? Why is that fuse in the fusebox getting so hot?
Answer: As the car overheats even at idle, I would suggest that you must have a flow problem. Check the thermostat, and flow test the radiator. Also check that the impellor hasn't come off the water pump.......The fuse thing.. get an auto electrician to check it out.. no problem for a good one...Basically you don't need any more than a standard cooling system in good order to make it all work..

Question: I would like to know what i need to turbocharge my xr4x4 dohc 2.0 efi, it is running a cat which i intend to take off and stainless exhaust, kn57i air kit
Answer: It can be done...but it is quite expensive...at least ?2500, if you want to get it anywhere near right. There is a special cast manifold required, plus new turbo, intercooler, engine management mods, and engine strip and build to new compression ratio. It's tempting to suggest the use of a Cosworth set-up, or better still, just buy a Cossie 4x4 !

Question: I have a vauxhall Astra ' 95 With a Vauxhall 1.7 Diesel engine which is fitted with a 'Low Blow' turbo. The turbo is leaking oil and causing the engine to burn blue smoke. Do you think that this could be due to a blocked oil return pipe, or is the turbo knackered??
Answer: A blocked return is a possibility, although I would guess unlikely, the return is fairly large compared to the inlet, and rarely blocks in service, unless the hose has collapsed. We could check the turbo out for you, and sort it out on a "cost of repair" basis, unless it is knackered as you suggest ! We can also supply an exchange unit of course. Call me on 01752 345880 during office hours, we take all the cards, and can despatch a new unit direct to your address. You'll even get a discount !

Question: Please could you tell me if the performance of a 1986 ,nissan micra 988cc would change noticibly change if you took the air filter of the carburretter and cut the exhaust off at the second silencer from the engine. Also if you got crap in the carb would ruin the engine beyond repair.
Answer: The only way of getting any more power from an air filter or exhaust system modification, is if there was some kind of restriction to gas flow there to begin with. For xample, if your exhaust strangles the exhaust gas output, and if the air filter is too poorly designed to allow maximum air flow, then removing or replacing them may well bring a performance benefit. You'll have to try it and see -with the aid of a rolling road. Dirt in the carb would not damage the engine, unless the subsequent lean mixture
