Subject: RS Turbo
Sender's Name: Nick
Question: own an RS Turbo. The problem with it is when you give the car loads of throttle it just splutters but if you give it very slow the car boosts up ok.
Answer: I would check all the hoses...and I mean all of them, very carefully. It sounds like you may have a split in the air flow sensor hose. This one goes from the bottom of the sensor to the turbo intake. If its split, you would get poor mixture control. These are complicated enough and if would be a mistake to get too technical without checking the basics. If you cant see anything obvious, take it to a professional!

Subject: RS 500 spec intercooler
Sender's Name: Ian Whitfield
Question: I have a 2.9 4 x 4 Sierra with a Turbo Technics conversion which has been modified even further with an upgraded DCU chip from your good self. What I would like to know is will the intercooler from an RS 500 fit, apart from the obvious chance to the inlets and outlets, also bearing in mind that its got A/C which I would like to keep if possible.
Answer: I would say that an RS intercooler would require a lot of modifications to fit. As you say, the trouble is the air con, and the lack of space in that area. It might be better to consider a charge cooler, as they take up less room. Pop in sometime and I will take a look for you.

Subject: Peugeot 106
Sender's Name: Dave
Question: have been told that my Peugeot 106XS '94 model cannot be tuned as I am told that it is hard to make the engine breathe any better....is this true? my current mods are a peco 2.5 inch back box and the car has been lowered.
Answer: Our experience is that most of the Peugeots make quite useful gains from air filter swaps. With a chip to suit we gained 10bhp from a 106 rallye with a better air filter and exhaust system. Good going for a small engine!!

Subject: XR2
Sender's Name: Mike Rowley
Question: I have got a one owner 1984 MkII XR2 with 116k on the clock. Its sounding like one of the valves is burning up (the engine vibrates but I can hear it in the exhaust) so to turn a problem into an opportunity what options to I have to improve the power? Head and cam sound obvious but what about the bottom end? What about an engine swap? ?500-?1000 is the budget.
Answer: The budget is not quite enough for the job. With that mileage I would recommend a full rebuild. If you could run to it, a head and cam swap are OK, but only if you but the right stuff. Dont use a profile less than 270 degrees and make sure that the guy who is doing your head has a flow bench at least! The alternative is just to do a standard rebuild of the head and wait for that 1.9 conversion to come along. You cant beat capacity!!!

Subject: Fiat Brava HSX
Sender's Name: Paul Hallett
Question: I am intending to tune a Fiat Brava HSX, do you have any ideas and can you quote for certain work. I intend it for race track use and road and I do intend to upgrade the brakes and suspension.
Answer: There are a few specialists which may be a better source of info on this project. You can't beat specialist knowledge when it comes to building a racing car. I used to race the MG Midget, and built up a big store of good information over the years, but of course it only applies to Midgets ! There is a company called Italtune who may help you, also you could try the series organiser for the championship you intend to race in.
