Question: I recently purchased a 1987 2.0 carb mazda 626 glx exec auto. The problem is that I am getting only around 15-18 mpg, under mainly short -medium journeys. The car has no obvious leaks, it was serviced before I got it and the emissions are 'spot on' but it had been running lean, although the exhaust ( and plugs) is sooted up. What is the likely cause and would a dyno tune spot carb/distributor probs ?..
Answer: A tune on a rolling road should throw up any faults like this, as the car can be tested under load. Bear in mind that the idle mixture may be OK, but not the running mixture. Check the choke operation, to make sure it is going off all the way, also that it is not on for too long, as you could be using a lot of fuel during the warm-up period.

Question: I have had a lot of trouble getting my 7 and 8th injectors working, which I have now rectified, Now I have another problem When I put the foot right down to the floor at around 3000-4500rpm there is a metal like rattling comes from the engine compartment, this only happens when I am at full throttle (i.e max boost). Is this the car running lean or something else?.
Answer: This sounds like detonation, and must be taken seriously before you blow the engine ! The original DCU supplied by Turbo Technics was an addition to the standard ECU, and controlled fuelling to the extra injectors, ignition timing control for boost, and an overboost function. If you have an ERL fuelling device, I would worry that you don't have proper timing control.

Question: Have bought c 200 merc - approx three years old. Nice car but keep getting stuffed away from lights by old biddies in metro's.Thought a chip might help - what difference would it make and how much?
Answer: Hmm.. the Old biddy problem..Well, you could fix them with a stare that says " beat me from the lights, and I'll kick your zimmer away from under you - Alternatively you could fit a Superchip, and blast off over the hill and far away...... Seriously, a chip is about all you can do with these cars, it will give you a bit extra across the range, especially in the lower throttle settings.Cost = ?165 plus vat, plus ?30 to fit and rolling road it.

Question: I came up with my Saxo on Wednesday, do you remember? Just a couple of questions I forgot to ask, what make where those springs (I know it does'nt make a difference but will sound good for my website) and also could you please confirm that was a 35mm drop as fellow Saxo owners are saying it looks a lot lower!
Answer: Chassis Dynamics springs ! The lowering thing isn't really that accurate of course..within 5mm either way anyhow. I find it helps to judge these things if you take the crates of Fosters out of the boot first !

Question: I have just fitted a Peco Big Bore2, 3" back box to my otherwise standard 1987 XR3i cabriolet. The car now seems to do quite a bit of exhaust popping on gear changes and deceleration. Is this a bad thing and due to the exhaust- should I get the car re-tuned, or is it just that the car will always have done that and I can hear the noise now because of the exhast?
Answer: The exhaust popping is considered desirable in certain circles!....It's not a bad thing in itself, you might have a lean mixture or a slight exhaust blow. It might always have done it, it's just that you are noticing it now. My Escort Cosworth does it on upchanges, accompanied with a spurt of flame from the exhaust, it may have something to do with running 25 psi boost...!!!!
