Subject: Triumph Spitfire

Question: I have a 1.3 triumph Spitfire, I was wondering on the best way of tuning it. At the moment I'm more interested in acceleration.It also runs on 4 star would changing it to unleaded make any difference.
Answer: Difficult to do very much with these as the engine is basically very weak,particularly in the bottom end. I would not recommend a cam swap for this reason. The cylinder head and carbs would benefit from careful attention, and you could fit valves and seats suitable for an unleaded conversion, although the engine would really benefit from using 98 octane fuel. You could consider fitting the 1500 version of this engine which would give you more torque.
 
Subject: Mini 1000 Tuning

Question: I wonder if you could give me a rough quote to get a Mini 1000 tuned. It has a standerd head, with a K&N air filter, Maniflow Exhaust system and Manifold, and an alloy inlet manifold.The car has been off the road for a while and these mods have been recently fitted, It is currently running the standard carb, and I have tried to change the needle but it still seems to lack power, obviously to get it set up correctly it needs to be on a rolling road.
Answer: No problems at all in sorting that out for you. The cost is ?30 plus Vat (?35.25) for a rolling road session which will include dealing with any carburettor problems. We are open from 8.30 - 5.30 Monday to Friday and 9am - 2pm on Saturday.
 
Subject: XR3i - Bad idle

Question: I own a 1988 XR3i, fitted with a K and N panel filter and standard exhaust. All the time I have owned the car it has been unable to idle. The car idles at only 400rpm but then if you hold the accelerator at 1000rpm the car will try to idle at 950-1000 for a short time. The engine cuts out when changing gear slowly or pulling up at traffic lights. My tuner has informed me that the injectors may need replacing since the car has covered 130,000miles but the problem was there at 87,000.
Answer: Bad idle is caused by poor idle speed control or poor mixture control..assuming no engine faults, like bad valve seating. If yours is EFi, suggest code read for throttle switch fault or faulty idle valve, also check for air leaks. Injectors can be flow checked on a test rig. To be fair, a good tuner should be able to sort this one!

Question: A while ago I wrote you about my XR2 rally-car. We will continue rallying with a standard XR2 in order to lower the costs and to keep the car reliable as possible. I have a tuned cylinderhead with a rally-road camshaft. I am still looking for a better set-up for my carburettor. The car needs more fuel . Sparkingplugs are white coloured and above 80mph the car misses a lot of power. Can you tune my carburettor? Type : TLDM 28/32 Weber.
Answer: Hello again ! .I would much prefer if you brought the whole car to me. I can set it up on the rolling road and make sure we get the best out of it. There are a number of modifications we can make to the carb. if regulations permit. What sort of airfilter do you have ?. Perhaps you could bring the car over, and spend two days with us ? I can even provide bed and breakfast!

Question: I currently own a Citroen Saxo 1.4i Westcoast. i have fitted a Piper Cams Rear box and i have done the I.C.E, But now i want to look at the engine. i am a student and i don't have very much money so what would you recommend that i do. i am quite interested in fitting a performance air filter and induction kit, what one would you recommend getting and where can i get one that is fairly cheap.
Answer: We have found that these 1.4 engines usually benefit quite nicely from an air filter conversion, also a superchip could squeeze out some more power. The difficulty comes from individual fit requirements. I don't think anyone does an actual filter kit for these. We have made them up before. Are you far away from us?. We once gained 12 bhp from a 1.4 Peugeot ( same thing) using exhaust, air filter and chip.
