Subject: Twin Turbo 2.9 - 4 x 4
Sender's Name: Ian Whitfield
Question: This is just up your street. When I adjust the air flow meters on my twin turbo 2.9 4x4 the co level does not change. It seems only to go up and not go down. The lowest it gets is around 5.60. Though when turning the air screws the values are steady, just seem on the high side. Any advice would be great...........
Answer: Your mixture is rich!, and outside the adjustment range of the sensors. Check the temperature sensor, and fuel pressure. Possible faulty air flow sensor also. It is possible to tweak the sensor springs for a leaner mixture, but I would fault find first.

Subject: Bad Idle on XR3i
Sender's Name: Chris CP
Question: I own a 1991 MK4 escort Xr-3i that isn't happy at idle. The engine is not standard: big valve head, 285 cam, boost valve, K&N,super chip, magnex exhaust system. The engine revs clean through the range but just does not want to know at idle, it surges, its lumpy, and sometimes even konks out. There are no induction leaks,I've renewed the plugs, leads and coil. If I freewheel the engine will always tickover at 1400rpm but as soon as the roadwheels stop the tickover drops to idle. I would be greatful for any a
Answer: As the idle responds to road speed the sensor is ok. Have you checked the compressions? Does the vehicle run any better from cold? if it does it could be a lean mixture fault corrected when running a richer mixture. Injector cleaner? I dont recommend it. Lucas Service could check out the injectors for you. I can only recommend a tuning session to help diagnose the fault/s.

Subject: Spitfire Racer

Question: I am building a spitfire racer and require a pair of secondhand 45s (webers or delautos) got any lying around?? thanks in advance Cris
Answer: Sorry Cris - none going at the moment.....typical really - I often get people offer me stuff like that but I can never match it with someone who wants it at the time. Try Motoring News Classifieds. Of course, when it comes to tuning it - give me a call! By the way I would guess that on a Spitfire engine you would be better off using 40 DCOE's.

Subject: VW Passat TDi
Sender's Name: Gary Carter
Question: I have a VW Passat TDi 110bhp which generally has been very reliable. However occasionally it suffers from a sudden drop in power - particularly on hills at speed such as on motorways. I have had the catalyst changed and this seemed too cure it.. although it still does it occasionally. Any thoughts? Gary
Answer: To be honest we dont normally get involved with diesel management systems. I would expect a catalytic converter fault to be consistent. I would suspect a boost pressure loss or possible fuel system fault. A rolling road session might show it up. Alan

Question: Having difficulty figuring out where I got my good looks from. Neither Mother nor Father particularly good looking, but I am just so handsome I can't believe it. Please help as I am beginning to thing I am the Milk Man's. Your son......Martyn......P.S. Great site..Getting better all the time..keep up the good work.....
Answer: Son, at the time you were born, we could not afford milk ! They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I can only say that if you are happy with your reflection, then hold onto that feeling, no matter what other people say.... Of course, we Jefferys get better looking and more desired by the Fair Sex as we get older, so try not to worry too much. One day, you'll be as popular and as well respected and admired as I am... until then keep your head down... P.S... don't forget..some of us keep our b
