Subject: Cavalier idle fault
Sender's Name: Mike B.
Question: have a Cavalier which runs very erratically. It starts from cold ok, but won't idle well, then as it warms up, the idle gets too fast. When it's hot it runs on when I switch it off. The car is an 1800 G plate.
Answer: Yep.. this is the usual Cavalier lousy Carburetter fault. We get a lot of these! Basically the choke isn't working properly, the flap part is normally fine, but the fast idle cam is always somewhere you don't want it to be. The real cure is to fit a Weber carb conversion, with a manual choke, or you could try a new choke assembly for the old carb. As the Weber works so well, with a performance and economy benefit, you can't beat that method if you can find the money to do it.

Subject: Nissan Pulsar Gti-R

Question: When the car is cold it is exceptionally fast pulling .7 bar boost. When the car is warm boost reduces to .6 and hesitates from 4500 rpm upwards. After 15 miles boost suddenly reduces to .4 and the car stutters on acceleration. If you turn the car off for 30 secs and restart boost goes back to .6. I have changed the plugs and fuel filter. Any help appreciated !
Answer: Code read might show something up. Possible weak mixture as OK when richer from cold. Oxy sensors can do strange things relative to temperature. Stutter on acceleration could be rich or weak mixture. Other problem area could be charge temp. sensor. The effect would be to reduce boost and/or ign. timing if temp. signal erronous. Common Cosworth fault!

Question: Thanks for your prompt reply, do you only tune engines or do you sell engines as well? If you sell engines how much would it cost to swop out the 1600 for a 2lt. Pinto ?
Answer: We will tackle most things !.. Big choice here, secondhand and take a chance, A new standard engine, fully rebuilt at around ?600, Mildly modified at around ?1000 upwards. Fitting average ?200. All plus vat, including Rolling Road Tuning.

Question: I was wondering if you could help, I own a Kit car that has an un-modified Ford Pinto 1600 engine, the car supposedly only weighs 880Kg, but I don't seem to have any power, the engine is out of a 1979 MkIII Cortina. I have had the engine tuned but this has only made a slight change, it does cruise nicely at 60mph but the fuel consumption is quite high, and it doesn't like to go much faster. Does the engine just need to be set up properly or should this have been done when it was tuned. What is the best a
Answer: I would guess, that the Cortina engine comes with a single choke downdraught Weber. A cheap upgrade would be to use the 28/36 DGAV Carburettor and Manifold from a number of sources including the Capri or Sierra. A carburettor from a 2.0 litre is easily jettable to suit. I can only assume that there are no faults with your engine such as low compression or incorrect cam timing. Unfortunately the 1600 engine has never been one to produce good power when performance tuned. My choice would be to use the 2.

Subject: Nissan or Celica ?
Sender's Name: Philip R
Question: Alan thinking of buying a Nissan Pulsar GTiR or a '91 GT4 Celica, which is more tunable and reliable without spending a fortune ? Would like around 250-280 bhp.
Answer: My feeling is that the Nissan is the better car, having said that, neither of these two are exactly straightforward or user friendly. The Nissan was not supplied here in any quantity, and spares will be tough to come by, at less than Nissan prices. The Toyota is sluggish in standard form, and only improves marginally with the first stage boost upgrade. They are a pig to work on ! The trouble is, everybody talks big bhp numbers with these cars, without questioning the cost of maintaining those power outputs.
