Subject: Enging Tuner || New Question

Question: Hi there, I\'ve got a 2002 impreza 2.0 gx non turbo and was wondering if you\'ve had much experience in playing with these engines? I don\'t fancy chucking mega money into it but wondered if it\'s possible to re-map it or do anything else to get some extra power out of it and how much would it cost and what sort of bhp gains?
Answer: Hi Chris - I wouldn't! there isn't really anything that can be done with the non turbo engines, apart from fitting a bigger one, with all the faff that entails. I'd just buy a faster Impreza if that's where you want to go.

Question: hi alan if the cam timing or the ignition timing is out can it sound like a rattle on the top end as if the cam is worn, the cam is new,if not any ideas,it,s a 1989 escort rs turbo, many thank,s steve.
Answer: Hi Steve - All noises require the hearing of them to make any sense out of it. Yes, these noises can sound similar, and some of them can indicate the risk of engine damage. I'd suggest finding someone to put a trained ear to it.

Question: how much do you think that would cost???
Answer: To be effective, you need to be spending upwards of 850. It's about replacing the head and uprating the carb to start with.

Question: Thanks for you reply Alan. The electrical side slightly disinterests me. Changing looms etc and doing ECU work would interest me, but the main love is Engines. If someone was to come to you to become an engine tuner would you want them to have a Mechanical Engineering degree or relevant work experience. I\'m just trying to gather the right information so I do the right thing. I am sort of thing as I want to go into working on engines; tuning them. A Mechanical Engineering degree would be best as when it would go into building bespoke parts etc... I\'ve also heard most engine tuners aren\'t mechanics. I don\'t plan on becoming a mechanic as I\'ve heard they do not get taught enough to tune engines as such. Yes they fault find and change parts but is it enough to engine tune? I understand that you do not do apprenticeships as tuning is a specialist area with a lot that could go wrong under the wrong hands
Answer: Hi Sam - Unfortunately the electrical side is where it's at! So many cars are now tuned via serial port, and a lot of it doesn't even involve lifting the bonnet. Any tuner now has to have a full understanding of engine management.

Question: this is a add on the the question i asked a second ago i also want it to still be drivable E.G without loads of lag
Answer: That's all about cam and carb choice. Certainly we could add around 20 bhp to standard without losing too much bottom end.
